Youth Leadership Council

While in Washington, D.C. each state selects a representative to lead their group and represent their state in the national Youth Leadership Council (YLC).
Originally know as the Youth Consulting Board (YCB), the YLC was created in 1976 by the board of directors of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). In 1998 the YCB became the Youth Leadership Council (YLC).
The first Youth Board consisted of seven people. In 1977, the Youth Board was increased to include one member from each state participating in the program. Currently there are 46 state representatives.This is a national leadership opportunity sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
YLC Selection
The members of the board are chosen by their respective states. The Illinois YLC representative is selected by his or her peers on the Youth Tour.
One person from each state is selected. The Illinois YLC delegate represents the entire state youth delegation not only during the Youth Tour, but for an entire year.
You must have at least 1 more year of high school left to qualify.
YLC Objectives
- To understand and involve youth in the principles and practices of cooperatives.
- To promote among youth a better understanding of the electric cooperative program.
- To advise and assist NRECA on youth and educational activities.
- To acquire a working knowledge of all energy sources and the role electric cooperatives play as energy users and suppliers.
- To become familiar with the goals and objectives of distribution cooperatives, statewides, generation and transmission cooperatives and NRECA.
